Underpants
Under a pants is meant a piece of clothing sold under the outerwear (z. B. under a trouser , a skirt or dress ) is supported and conventionally the anus and the genitals covered. In the last few decades, for fashion reasons, underpants types have also been developed that only partially or partially not cover the areas mentioned. The underpants are counted as underwear . To achieve an increased erotic charisma, specially crafted underpants are also used as lingerie . There are underpants for men and women.

Underpants for boys or men often have an intervention , i. H. a slit on the front through which the penis can be guided to urinate . However, many men consider the procedure in the underpants to be cumbersome and superfluous. They wear non-invasive briefs .
Long johns (after their English name also Long Johns ) are mainly worn by men in 3/4 or 1/1 length as protection against the cold in the cold season or during winter sports . Colloquially they are also referred to as " love killers ". Warm tights are an alternative .
history
The forerunner of today's underpants is the medieval brouche , a type of very wide, long underpants with leg warmers attached to the belt . In the course of time, the leg warmers became longer and developed into tight-fitting trousers , at times with a pubic capsule , the wide and long brouche became narrower and shorter. Caterina de 'Medici (1519–1589) is considered to be one of the first women to bring the Italian fashion of wearing underpants to the French court.
Long underpants appeared around 1870. The front slit was introduced after the First World War.
Until the beginning of the 19th century, women generally did not wear underpants; at most, peasant women wore trousers under their clothes as protection against the cold. However, there could be gaps in tradition here, as there are no writings or images that deal more closely with the subject of underwear, which is perceived as suggestive.
Around 1805 there were the first "trousers" for women that reached below the knee or to the ankle and were cut wide. They were made of linen or cotton and had an open crotch (in southern Germany also called stand-up trousers ). After 1840, underpants were compulsory for women; the lower classes, however, continued to go “bottomless”. Towards the end of the 19th century, female underpants were cut very wide, like harem pants. From 1877 there were one-piece combinations such as shirt trousers or "petticoat trousers ". The knickers were introduced in 1914.
In the 20th century (until the 1980s) the development of underpants was characterized by a trend towards increasingly scarce models, both in men’s and women’s underwear. Slips dominated the action.
Ever tighter creations resulted in mini briefs, Rio briefs, thongs , string thongs , etc. Since the 1980s, underpants with more material abundance began to appear again: boxer shorts , bodies, panties, etc.
Wearing habits
Today there is social consensus that underpants are changed more often than the rest of the clothing for hygienic reasons. This has become possible in almost every household thanks to the inexpensive availability of the underwear itself and the ease of cleaning with fully automatic washing machines. In the 1950s it was different - teachers admonished their students to change their underwear at least once a week.
Underpants, as the name suggests, are worn under other trousers so that they are not visible. However, there are current fashion trends that counteract this. In general, underwear has been worn visibly for some time . This so-called sagging comes from American prisons, whose inmates are not allowed to have belts .
Gym shorts and sports pants , which are often worn directly on the body, are usually not counted as underpants. Wearing underwear with swimming trunks is completely unnecessary and in certain bathing establishments it is even undesirable for reasons of hygiene.
Trivia
Unterhose is also the nickname of the Schönberg tower near Pfullingen ("Pfullinger Unterhose") .
