Schönberg Tower

The Schönbergturm is a 26.4 meter high observation tower that was built in 1905 by Professor Theodor Fischer , who was at the Technical University of Stuttgart at the time, on the Swabian Alb in Baden-Württemberg . It stands on the Schönberg (originally Schemberg), a 793 meter high mountain on the Albtrauf , which towers over the exit of the Echaz valley two kilometers south of Pfullingen . Because of its shape and color, the tower is popularly known as Pfullinger Unterhose , "Onderhos". The Schönberg forms an almost flat plateau on its summit, with the tower at the eastern tip.

history

Early recording (around 1914)

The builder of the Schönberg tower was the Swabian Alb Association . In 1893 the first efforts were made to build a tower on the Schönberg, and the design by Theodor Fischer , who also planned the Pfullinger Hallen , was implemented in 1905 . The building permit was issued on June 28, 1905 by the Reutlingen Regional Authority, and the construction was carried out from August to November of the same year by the Stuttgart construction company Luipold and Schneider. The inauguration ceremony took place on March 25, 1906. The construction of the tower had cost 17,000  marks (by today's standards around 200,000  euros ) and was financed mainly by the Pfullinger patron Louis Laiblin .

The reinforced concrete tower is 28 meters high including the foundation and consists of two octagonal tower shafts each with a staircase for ascent and descent, which are connected at the top by the 8.5-meter-wide gallery and below by the entrance area. The roofs over the viewing platform and the entrance area were originally made with wooden shingles. It was not until November 1949 that they were replaced by copper roofs , which are now no longer copper-red, but covered with a green patina .

more details

The idiosyncratic construction as a double tower is rare. Enthroned on the Albtrauf, clearly visible above the foothills of the Alb, it represents the gateway to the Swabian Alb. The Schönberg Tower is the landmark of Pfullingen.

The Schönberg Tower can only be reached on foot; the forest area around the Schönberg summit is only accessible through narrow, sometimes steep forest paths. An asphalt road leads up to 500 meters to the summit to a parking lot on the "Wanne". The main hiking trail Black Forest-Swabian Alb-Allgäu-Weg (HW 5) of the Swabian Alb Association also leads over the mountain.

The tower is still owned by the Swabian Alb Association, which operates it on Sundays and public holidays. This can be seen from a raised flag on the west tower. Below the tower there are benches and tables for picnics, two fire pits and a kiosk.

The tower is always open. From the viewing platform, which can be reached via 108 steps, you have a very good view of the Alb foreland and Schönbuch . When the weather is clear you can also see the Stuttgart TV tower on the horizon, as well as the Schurwald and the Altbach / Deizisau thermal power station . From northwest to southeast you can see the Albtrauf between Jusi and Roßberg .
