Boxer shorts are shorts that are worn as underpants , which have a similar cut to boxing shorts . These are usually called boxing pants. Boxer shorts belong to the group of shorts and underwear . They sit loosely on the body and cover it from the hip to the middle thigh. Most of the time they have an opening that can be closed with buttons. Zippers are not common. On most models, the upper waistband is continuous and has an elastic band. Two different cuts are common in the lower part: tight-fitting pants with elastic cuffs also on the legs or loose, "fluttering" pants that do not tightly enclose the legs. The tight-fitting cut is a backward development towards the older types of underpants (see panties ).

Origin and explanation of terms

In 1925, the first real boxer shorts were created, which were similar to today's underwear. They go back to Jacob Golomb, the founder of Everlast, an outfitting company for boxers who optimized the design for the body of professional boxers by replacing the leather cords at the waist with an elastic waistband - ostensibly because it enabled better "footwork" . This is where the current term “boxer shorts” comes from. The word “ underpants ” also found its way into the dictionary at this time.

In 1934 Arthur Kneibler, a manager and designer of the Cooper knitting mill in Wisconsin, introduced a new variant of the underpants that rivaled boxer shorts, the slip . She was named Jockey and was distinguished by the fact that she was legless. In three months he sold 30,000 pieces in Chicago alone. In 1990, this resulted in the boxer briefs, which retained the longer cut of the boxer shorts and at the same time retained the tightness of the briefs and which still exist on the market today. However, the design is very similar to "underpants" that were already there in the past.

It was only around 1947 that boxer shorts regained popularity. The photo shoot for a new Levi’s advertisement in the 1980s with the English model Nick Kamen, who was shown in white boxer shorts, was of great importance for its popularity .

The boxer shorts worn as underpants are usually much more simply cut and less conspicuous in design, as well as less wide and long than shorts that are used in professional and amateur boxing.

A study by the magazine Textilwirtschaft from 2002 found that every third German man wears boxer shorts. Today around 40 percent of all briefs sold worldwide are boxer shorts. In a European comparison, Italians invest the most in underwear (567 million euros in 2012), followed by Germans, who spent an estimated 545 million euros on it in 2012.

Boxer shorts in boxing

To distinguish it from the boxer shorts worn as underwear, the shorts used in boxing are usually called boxers or boxer shorts in German. They are usually cut more generously so that there is space for a groin guard underneath. They are usually made of shiny nylon or polyester material. The gathered elastic waistband is usually wider than in the underpants version and is quilted several times. The waistband is higher than that of other sports pants and marks the waistline that is important for the rules of boxing. For better recognition by the referee , the collar is usually designed in a contrasting color. At the waist head usually is the logo of the manufacturer. In addition to boxing gloves , shoes and groin protectors, they are an important element of boxing equipment. Common brands include a. Everlast , Adidas , Ben Lee , Lonsdale , PaffenSport and Venum. When kickboxing and long pants are used, the upper part is but similar cut as the short boxing pants described.

Stylistic and fashionable

Boxer shorts are offered for both genders, but are more common among men. Current fashion trends, boxer shorts, in addition to swimming shorts to wear, are seen in many bathhouses reluctant (see here ). Similar to underpants in general, sagging with boxer shorts has recently become fashionable among young people. The underpants are worn in such a way that the upper waistband protrudes from the jeans worn over them and the brand inscription can be clearly read. Boxer shorts are also widely used as nightwear .

Medical aspects

Whether wearing boxer shorts also has health benefits is controversial due to contradicting scientific findings. According to a study published in the journal Human Reproduction , however, comfortable boxer shorts, in contrast to tight-fitting briefs, have a positive effect on the quality of the sperm. However, this has not been clearly proven.
