Toledo , officially Município de Toledo , is a city in the west of the Brazilian state Paraná . It is a center of the agricultural and food industry .

At the 2010 census, the city had 119,313 inhabitants called Toledano. It ranks 12th among the municipalities in Paraná according to population size. With an area of ​​1197 km², the population density is 100 people per km².

The distance to the eastern capital Curitiba is 540 km. The state border with Paraguay , which is formed here by the Rio Paraná , runs about 60 km to the west .

history

The municipality was already heavily populated since 1946. A law of November 14, 1951, initiated by the governor Bento Munhoz da Rocha Neto , decided to found the city of Toledo and a district of the same name from former areas of the city of Foz do Iguaçu , and after the first municipal elections on November 9, 1952 the next Year officially established on December 14, 1952 (emancipation). Ernesto Dall'Óglio became the first city prefect.

In 1959, the Roman Catholic diocese of Toledo (Brazil) was established in the city . His cathedral Cristo Rei (Christ the King) was built in the late 1970s in a modern style.

After the local elections in 2016, the 17th city prefect is Lucio de Marchi from the Partido Progressista (PP) for the 2017-2020 term .

economy

Several large Brazilian companies are based in Toledo. For example the pharmaceutical company Prati-Donaduzzi, which has its headquarters there in the meantime. But the food manufacturer Sadia also produces meat products in a factory there. Many car dealerships are also located in Avendia Parigot de Souza, one of the major thoroughfares in Toledo. The brands that are common and widespread in Brazil, such as Fiat , Chevrolet and VW, are present there, but also Hyundai , Renault and Ford .

The shopping center Panambi, named after the stream that rises in the city center, and the Avenida Maripa with its many small shops from all branches, but also the entire city center around the Catedral de Toledo, offer shopping opportunities. The opening of another, much larger Costa Oeste shopping center in Conj. Res.Tocantins planned. The construction work has already started.

Infrastructure

Toledo is connected to the BR-467 , which begins in Cascavel and runs past the city to the east. She is nicknamed: Rodovia José Neves Formigheri. There is also a bus station on Avenida Parigot de Souza, the Rodoviário Alcido Leonardi terminal. From here you can reach São Paulo in just under twelve hours.

education

On the one hand, Toledo has several schools and universities. There are four private schools, the highly renowned Colégio Alfa with the Escola Intentus, the Colégio La Salle, the Colégio Incomar and the Fundação Educacional de Toledo (Funet). There are also state schools, which are much less elitist.

For some years now, more and more universities have been settling here. These include the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná (PUC-PR), the Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Paraná (UNIOESTE) and the Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná (UTFPR). These are all church or state universities. The Universidade Paranaense (UNIPAR) and the Faculdade Sul Brasil (FASUL) are private universities, they are chargeable and therefore not as popular as the state and church universities.
