The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Porto Velho ( lat. : Archidioecesis Portus Veteris ) is in Brazil located Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Porto Velho in the state of Rondônia .

history

The Archdiocese of Porto Velho was founded on May 1, 1925 by Pope Pius XI. Erected from territorial cession of the dioceses of Amazonas and São Luíz de Cáceres as the territorial prelature Porto Velho and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Belém do Pará as a suffragan . On March 1, 1929, the Territorial Prelature Porto Velho gave up parts of its territory to establish the Territorial Prelature Guajará-Mirim . The territorial prelature Porto Velho was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Manaus as a suffragan on February 16, 1952. On June 26, 1961, the Territorial Prelature Porto Velho gave up parts of its territory to establish the Territorial Prelature Humaitá . Another assignment of territory took place on January 3, 1978 to establish the Territorial Prelature of Vila Rondônia .

On October 16, 1979, the territorial prelature Porto Velho was raised to the diocese by Pope John Paul II with the papal bull Cum praelaturae . The diocese of Porto Velho was elevated to an archdiocese on October 4, 1982.
