history

Today's Archdiocese was founded by Pope Pius X on September 21, 1903 from the Archdiocese of Belém do Pará as a territorial prelature . Various territories were ceded to establish the Xingu Prelature (1934), Macapá Prelature (1949), Óbidos Prelature (1957) and Itaituba Prelature (1988).

On October 16, 1979, Pope John Paul II was raised to the diocese as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Belém do Pará . Pope Francis elevated the diocese of Santarém to an archbishopric on November 6, 2019 and subordinated the dioceses Óbidos and Xingu-Altamira as well as the territorial prelatures Itaituba and Alto Xingu-Tucumã as suffragandiocese .
