Flávio Giovenale
Flávio Giovenale SDB (born May 6, 1954 in Murello ) is an Italian religious , missionary and Roman Catholic bishop of Cruzeiro do Sul .
Life
After he had made his first profession on September 8, 1971 in the religious community of the Salesians of Don Bosco , he went to Brazil as a missionary , where he studied philosophy at the Salesian Institute for Philosophy and Education in Lorena , São Paulo in 1975 and 1976 and from 1978 to 1981 Theology at the Theological Institute Pius XI. in São Paulo. On December 20, 1981 he was ordained a priest in Murello . In 1982 and 1983 he worked in the vocational ministry in Pará .
In 1984 and 1985 he completed postgraduate studies in the Faculty of Spirituality of the Pontifical University of the Salesians . From 1986 to 1989 he was rector of the Small Seminary and from 1990 to 1991 of the Great Seminary in Manaus . From 1992 to 1997 he took over the post of provincial economist in his religious community. From 1994 to 1997 he was also Mission Procurator for Brazil.
He was appointed Bishop of Abaetetuba on October 8, 1997 by Pope John Paul II . On December 8 of the same year, the Archbishop of Manaus , Luiz Soares Vieira , donated him episcopal ordination . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Marabá , José Vieira de Lima TOR , and the Bishop of Lins , Irineu Danelón SDB. The inauguration took place on December 21, 1997. His motto is “Que todos se sintam amados por Deus”. From 1999 to 2003 he was secretary, 2003 and 2004 vice-president, from 2004 to 2007 president of the North 2 region of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference .
When he denounced the pedophile networks and child prostitution in the Amazon region in 2009 , he received death threats as a result. Along with Erwin Kräutler and José Luís Azcona Hermoso, he is one of the most endangered bishops in Brazil.
On September 19, 2012, he was appointed Bishop of Santarém . Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Cruzeiro do Sul on September 19, 2018 . The inauguration took place on December 16 of the same year.
