Luiz Soares Vieira

Luiz Soares Vieira (born May 2, 1937 in Conchas ) is a Brazilian clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Manaus .

Life

Luiz Soares Vieira studied philosophy and theology at the seminary of São Paulo and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . He was ordained a priest in Rome on February 21, 1960 . He later became rector of the Philosophical Seminary in Apucarana .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Macapá on April 25, 1984 . He received his episcopal ordination on July 1st of the same year by the Bishop of Apucarana , Domingos Gabriel Wisniewski CM ; Co- consecrators were Geraldo Majella Agnelo , Archbishop of Londrina , and Romeu Alberti , Archbishop of Ribeirão Preto . As a motto he chose Ministrare non ministrari .

On November 13, 1991 he was appointed Archbishop of Manaus . From 2007 to 2011 he was Vice President of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference .

On December 12, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age. A school in Manaus is named after Luiz Soares Vieira.
