history

The territorial prelature Itaituba was established on July 6, 1988 by Pope John Paul II from cession of territory of the diocese of Santarém and subordinated to the archdiocese of Belém do Pará as a suffragan diocese. Pope Francis made the territorial prelature subject to the Archdiocese of Santarém as a suffragan on November 6, 2019.
