Santarém is a city in northern Brazil about 700 km west of Belém and has about 300,000 inhabitants.

geography

Santarém is located on an area of 28,058 square kilometers roughly halfway between Manaus in the west and Belém in the east in the state of Pará . The Rio Tapajós flows into the Amazon at Santarém . Temperatures are around 22 to 35 ° C all year round.

history

In 1659 Portuguese Jesuits settled at the mouth of the Rio Tapajós . The construction of the Nossa Senhora da Conceição chapel on June 22, 1661 is considered to be the foundation date of the settlement. The Luxembourg Jesuit father Johann Philipp Bettendorf is considered to be the founder .

Until 1758 the place had the Indian name Tupaiús. Francisco Xavier de Mendonça Furtado was governor of the State of Pará at the time and wanted to transform the Amazon into a new Portugal . The settlements and villages were given Portuguese names, e.g. B. Soure or Óbidos . Tupaiús became Santarém, with reference to the historic Portuguese city of Santarém .

The architecture of the older parts of the city is a witness to the former rubber boom .

religion

The city is the seat of the Archdiocese of Santarém .

economy

The city's economic boom is due to the rich deposits of mineral resources such as bauxite and gold in the wider area.

Today the inhabitants live mainly from cattle breeding and fishing . Make ceramic products and hammocks made of cotton ago. They trade in precious woods , para nuts , pepper , soybeans and jute . The rubber trade also plays a small role in the town.

traffic

The port of Santarém is to become one of the most important export ports for soy from the state of Mato Grosso . The asphalting of the main road from Cuiabá to Santarém, which is currently being discussed, would significantly reduce the transport costs for soy. Due to the asphalting plans, massive soil speculation is starting along the road, which is leading to the displacement of smallholders by soy producers. It is feared that this development will lead to an intensification of the deforestation dynamic in the region.

Airport

Santarém also has an airport. Flights from this take place several times a day.

There are non-stop flights to Manaus, Belem, Trombetas and Altamira.

Culture and sights

  • When the two rivers converge, the green water of the Rio Tapajós mixes slowly with the brown Amazon. The waters flow side by side for about 6 kilometers before mixing because they have different flow speeds and temperatures.
  • Miles of sandy beaches like Alter do Chao
  • The house of the seven doors of Baron São Nicolau of Santarêm
  • The Praça Mirante do Tapajos
  • The Church "Nossa Senhora da Conceição"
