The Diocese of Óbidos ( Latin Dioecesis Obidensis , Portuguese Diocese de Óbidos ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in Óbidos in the Brazilian state of Pará .

history

The diocese was founded in 1957 as a territorial prelature from the then territorial prelature of Santarém as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Belém do Pará . It lies on the Amazon over the equator and is ten times the size of the Münster diocese , which is helping to build the diocese. On November 9, 2011, the territorial prelature was raised to the rank of diocese. Pope Francis made the diocese subject to the Archdiocese of Santarém as a suffragan diocese on November 6, 2019.

A diocesan partnership with the German diocese of Würzburg has existed since December 2, 2012 .
