The Territorial Prelature Xingu ( Latin Praelatura Territorialis Xinguensis , Portuguese Prelazia do Xingu ) was a Roman Catholic territorial prelature located in Brazil and the largest diocese in Brazil in terms of area. The bishopric was Altamira in the state of Pará . In November 2019 the prelature was dissolved and the territory was organized into new dioceses.

Xingu is known, among other things, for the work of the former Bishop Erwin Kräutler for the rights of the Indians and the preservation of the Amazon jungle.

history

The territorial prelature Xingu was on August 16, 1934 by Pope Pius XI. with the papal bull Animarum bonum postulat from the cession of territory by the Archdiocese of Belém do Pará and the territorial prelatures Santíssima Conceição do Araguaia and Santarém . The territorial prelature Xingu was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Belém do Pará as a suffragan . The Congregation of Missionaries of the Precious Blood (CPPS) was entrusted with the pastoral care .

In 1935 Armando Bahlmann OFM was first appointed as Apostolic Administrator , followed in the same year by Clemens Geiger, who in 1948 was appointed the first prelate of Xingu.

On November 6, 2019, Pope Francis repealed the Xingu Territorial Prelature. The territory was divided into two simultaneously newly established dioceses, the diocese of Xingu-Altamira and the territorial prelature of Alto Xingu-Tucumã . The previous prelate, João Muniz Alves, OFM , was appointed the first bishop of Xingu-Altamira.
