Franz Anton de Paula Gaheis (born April 1, 1763 in Krems an der Donau , † August 25, 1809 in Vienna ) was an Austrian pedagogue and local historian.

Life

Gaheis first learned the trade of a book printer. Then he studied theology and philosophy and entered the Piarist order , but was never ordained a priest. He belonged to the order from 1780 to 1788, his order name was Anton. In the course of the Josephine Enlightenment, he resigned from the order. Gaheis worked as a teacher and in 1788 became director of the new German secondary school in Korneuburg . In 1798 he founded an industrial institute for girls there . As a result of his educational successes, Emperor Franz II. Gaheis called to Vienna. Here he entered the service of the magistrate and was active in the study revision court commission.

After his death, Gaheis was buried in the Sankt Marxer Friedhof . In 1910 the Gaheisgasse in Vienna- Hietzing was named after him. In Krems , too , a street was named after him.

Franz Anton Gaheis earned services as an elementary school reformer. With a draft for an institute for blind children in 1802, however, he was unable to prevail.

In addition to his educational work, Gaheis wrote several books on the local history of Vienna and the surrounding area, which led to a rediscovery of the Viennese landscape and gave impetus to tourism.
