history
The diocese of Santíssima Conceição do Araguaia was on March 27, 1976 by Pope Paul VI. from territorial cessions of the territorial prelatures Cristalândia and Marabá built as the territorial prelature Santíssima Conceição do Araguaia and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Belém do Pará as a suffragan . On October 16, 1979, the territorial prelature Santíssima Conceição do Araguaia was elevated to the diocese by Pope John Paul II with the papal bull Cum Praelaturae .
