Estêvão Cardoso de Avellar

Estêvão Cardoso de Avellar OP (born November 4, 1917 in Três Corações , Brazil ; † December 3, 2009 in Uberlândia , Minas Gerais , Brazil) was a Brazilian religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Uberlândia .

Life

Estêvão Cardoso de Avellar joined the religious order of the Dominicans at and studied philosophy at the seminary of Mariana and theology at the Dominican University in France. He was ordained a priest on October 6, 1946 . He was a novice master , prior of the Monastery of Belo Horizonte (MG) and prior of the Monastery of Rio de Janeiro (RJ).

Pope Paul VI appointed him on August 6, 1971 titular bishop of Eucarpia and coadjutor prelate of Marabá . The Apostolic Nuncio in Brazil, Archbishop Umberto Mozzoni , donated him episcopal ordination on September 26th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Othon Motta , Bishop of Campanha , and Tomás Balduino OP, Bishop of Goiás . His motto was: he loved her to the end. (Amou-os até o fim).

He was named Prelate of Santíssima Conceição do Araguaia on March 27, 1976 and Bishop of Uberlândia on March 20, 1978. He was also Vice President of Regional Leste 2 ( Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo ) of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (CNNB).

On December 23, 1992, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. Estêvão Cardoso de Avellar was buried in the crypt of the Cathedral of Santa Teresinha in Uberlândia.
