Umberto Mozzoni

Umberto Cardinal Mozzoni (born June 29, 1904 in Buenos Aires , † November 7, 1983 in Rome ) was a diplomat of the Holy See and later Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Umberto Mozzoni was born as the son of Italian emigrants in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires. After finishing school, he studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Macerata and Rome . He received on 14 August 1927, the sacrament of Holy Orders , and then worked as a counselor and lecturer in the Diocese of Macerata. From 1935 to 1954 he was in the diplomatic service of the Vatican and performed various tasks in Canada , Great Britain and Portugal .

Pope Pius XII appointed him in 1954 titular archbishop of Side and apostolic nuncio in Bolivia . The episcopal ordination received Umberto Mozzoni on December 5, 1954 Cardinal James Charles McGuigan , Archbishop of Toronto ; Co- consecrators were Curia Archbishop Antonio Samorè and Sivio Cassulo , Bishop of Macerata e Tolentino . In 1958 Umberto Mozzoni became nuncio in Argentina. He attended the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 . In 1969 he took over the leadership of the Apostolic Nunciature in Brazil . Pope Paul VI took him on March 5, 1973 as a cardinal deacon with the titular diakonia Sant'Eugenio in the college of cardinals and a year later appointed him president of the cardinal commission for the holy shrines of Pompeii and Loreto . On February 2, 1983, he was appointed cardinal priest while retaining his title diakonia , which was pro hac vice elevated to title church .

Umberto Mozzoni died on November 7, 1983 in Rome and was buried in the Cathedral of Macerata.
