The Congregation was founded in Verona on November 4, 1816 by Saint Gaspar Bertoni , who placed it under the patronage of holy wounds . The Decretum laudis was issued on April 16, 1855, the community received the final approval on September 15, 1890. The name also refers to the place where the community was founded, the church and monastery of the stigmatization of St. Francis were consecrated. Gaspar Bertoni founded the Congregation after seeing a vision in front of an image of St. Ignatius of Loyola .

The first constitutions of the Congregation, like the entire spirituality of the stigmatists, were based on those of the Society of Jesus . The congregation remained a small one. In 1905 the Stigmatines established their first branches in the United States, and in 1910 in Brazil. As of December 31, 2009, the Stigmatines had a total of 99 branches and 441 religious, 325 of them priests . They work in the apostolates of the education of the youth, the holding of days of reflection and popular missions and the formation of clergy. The current Superior General is Father Andrea Meschi. In 2003 there were stigmatists in 14 countries around the world, including Italy, Brazil, the United States, Thailand, the Philippines, Chile and Lesotho.
