Gaspar Bertoni
Gaspar Luigi Dionigi Bertoni (born October 9, 1777 in Verona , † June 12, 1853 in Verona) was an Italian founder and priest . He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church .
Life
Gaspar Bertoni came from a wealthy family of notaries. As a gifted student, he entered the seminary in his hometown after graduating from school and was ordained a priest at the age of 23 . He was first appointed spiritual of the seminary and in 1808 became spiritual of the Canossians .
In 1816 Bertoni founded the Congregation of the Holy Wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ , or Stigmatine for short . The members of this religious order, which was recognized papally in 1925, support the respective local bishop in missionary and pastoral matters. Bertoni, who was a popular popular missionary, was promoted to Apostolic Missionary by the Holy See . Pope Paul VI Gaspar Luigi Dionigi Bertoni beatified in 1975 , Pope John Paul II canonized him in 1989 .
