Sérgio Cardinal da Rocha (born October 21, 1959 in Dobrada , State of São Paulo ) is a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia and Primate of Brazil.

Life

Sérgio da Rocha studied philosophy at the seminary in São Carlos and theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas . On December 14, 1984, he received the sacrament of ordination through the Bishop of São Carlos , Constantino Amstalden . In January 1997 he obtained a doctorate in moral theology from the Pontifical Lateran University . In the seminary of the diocese of São Carlos he was first spiritual, later professor and rector. From 1989 to 2001 he was also Professor of Moral Theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas.

On 13 June 2001 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Alba and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Fortaleza . The Archbishop of Fortaleza, José Antônio Aparecido Tosi Marques , donated him episcopal ordination on August 11 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of São Carlos, Joviano de Lima Júnior SSS , and the Bishop of Bragança Paulista , Bruno Gamberini .

On January 31, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to Coadjutor Archbishop of Teresina . Sérgio da Rocha became Archbishop of Teresina on September 3, 2008, succeeding Celso José Pinto da Silva , who resigned for reasons of age. On June 15, 2011 Benedict XVI appointed him. to the Archbishop of Brasília .

On April 20, 2015, the Brazilian bishops elected da Rocha to succeed Raymundo Cardinal Damasceno Assis as chairman of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (CNBB).

In the consistory of November 19, 2016, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Croce in via Flaminia in the college of cardinals .

On January 14, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America . On November 18, 2017, the Pope appointed him Relator General for the 15th Ordinary Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in October 2018. On July 13, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Congregation for the Clergy for five years .

On March 11, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia and, associated with it, Primate of Brazil. The inauguration took place on June 5 of the same year.
