São Carlos [ sɐu̯mcar̯lus ] ( port. For Saint Charles ) is a city in the state of São Paulo in Brazil . 241,389 (as of 2015) people live there on an area of ​​1,141 km².

São Carlos is centrally located in the state of São Paulo, about 230 km from the city of São Paulo. Due to its location at an altitude of over 856 meters, it has a mild climate.

São Carlos was founded in 1857 by Antônio Carlos de Arruda Botelho during the coffee boom. In the surrounding area, instead of coffee, sugar cane is mainly grown today, while the city itself is home to industrial companies, including plants from Volkswagen , Faber-Castell , Electrolux , Tecumseh Products and Husqvarna AB . The city is the seat of the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) ( Portuguese : Universidade Federal de São Carlos ), two campuses of the University of São Paulo (USP) and other universities, so that São Carlos has the character of a student city.
