Raymundo Cardinal Damasceno Assis (born February 15, 1937 in Capela Nova , Brazil ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and emeritus Archbishop of Aparecida .

Life

In 1955 Damasceno Assis entered the seminary of Mariana . In 1961 he began to study Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , which he completed with a doctorate . In 1965 Raymundo Damasceno Assis went to Munich to further specialize in catechesis .

On March 19, 1968, Damasceno Assis received the sacrament of ordination . He worked in the office of the Seminary and the University of Brasília before being appointed Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Brasília . Pope Paul VI awarded him the title of Chaplain to His Holiness on August 18, 1970 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Nova Petra and auxiliary bishop in Brasília on June 18, 1986 . The episcopal ordination took place on September 15 of the same year by José Cardinal Freire Falcão . Co-consecrators were Old Archbishop José Newton de Almeida Baptista and Auxiliary Bishop Geraldo do Espírito Santo Ávila . From 1995 to 2003 Raymundo Damasceno Assis was also general secretary of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference . On January 28, 2004, John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Aparecida . Damasceno Assis took up this office on March 25 of the same year.

Archbishop Raymundo Damasceno Assis is a member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications . From 2007 to 2011 he was President of CELAM . Raymundo Damasceno Assis was founded by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed a member of the Twelfth General Assembly on September 6, 2008 (October 5 to 26, 2008) and a member of the Second Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Africa on September 23, 2009 (October 4 to 25, 2009). On October 8, 2009, he was appointed a member of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America .

In the solemn consistory of November 20, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI accepted him. as a cardinal priest with the titular Church Immacolata al Tiburtino in the college of cardinals . Subsequently, on December 29, 2010, the Pope renewed his appointment as a member of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America and also appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications . After the resignation of Benedict XVI. he participated in the 2013 conclave .

Membership in the Latin America Commission was confirmed by Pope Francis on January 15, 2014 . On November 21, 2014, the Pope appointed him one of the four presidents of the 14th General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops (October 4 to 25, 2015).

Raymundo Damasceno Assis was from May 2011 to April 2015 as the successor to Geraldo Lyrio Rocha chairman of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference.

On November 16, 2016, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.
