Daniel Mark Buechlein

Daniel Mark Buechlein OSB (born April 20, 1938 in Jasper , Indiana as Marcus George Buechlein ; † January 25, 2018 in Saint Meinrad , Spencer County , Indiana) was an American religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Indianapolis .

Life

Daniel Mark Buechlein entered the Benedictine - Archabbey a St. Meinrad in Indiana, where he on 15 August 1963 professed took off and on May 3, 1964 ordination received in St. Meinrad. He completed further studies at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo , the religious college of the Benedictines in Rome. From 1971 to 1987 Buechlein was rector of the theological college (School of Theology) of the archabbey, since 1982 also of the "Saint Meinrad College".

Pope John Paul II named him 3rd Bishop of Memphis , Tennessee, on January 20, 1987 . He received his episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of Louisville , Thomas Cajetan Kelly OP , on March 2 of the same year; Co- consecrators were James Francis Stafford , Archbishop of Denver , and Edward Thomas O'Meara , Archbishop of Indianapolis .

On July 14, 1992, he was appointed fifth Archbishop of Indianapolis by John Paul II, and was installed in office on September 9 of the same year. He founded the seminary in Indianapolis. Buechlein was a consultor to the Congregation for the Clergy and a member of the “Pro Life” committee of the American Bishops' Conference. His resignation for health reasons after a stroke was on September 21, 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI. accepted.
