The shot put men at the 1998 European Athletics Championships was on 18 August 1998 in Népstadion the Hungarian capital Budapest discharged. Qualification and final took place on the same day.
In this competition, the Ukrainian shot putters won two medals, gold and bronze. The European champion was the Olympic third in 1996 and Vice European champion in 1994 Oleksandr Bahatsch . He won ahead of the German runner-up in 1997, Oliver-Sven Buder . Bronze went to Jurij Bilonoh .

qualification
August 18, 1998
28 participants competed in two groups for the qualification round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 20.00 m. Three athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the nine next-placed athletes to twelve athletes (highlighted in light green). So finally 19.20 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
