The men's triple jump at the 1998 European Athletics Championships was held on August 22 and 23, 1998 in the Népstadion in the Hungarian capital, Budapest .
The European champion was the Olympic runner-up in 1996 , world champion in 1995 , runner-up world champion in 1997 and world record holder Jonathan Edwards . Second place went to defending champion Denis Kapustin . Bronze went to the Bulgarian Rostislav Dimitrov .

Record improvement
European champion Jonathan Edwards improved the existing EM record in the final on 23 August by 25 centimeters to 17.99 m.

qualification
August 22, 1998
32 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 16.90 m. Three athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the nine next-placed athletes to twelve jumpers (highlighted in light green). So finally 16.50 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
