The women's long jump at the 1998 European Athletics Championships was held on August 21 and 22, 1998 in the Népstadion in the Hungarian capital, Budapest .
For the fourth time in a row, the German Heike Drechsler became European Champion. She had previously since 1993 as well as two world championship titles ( 1983 / 1993 ) and an Olympic gold medal ( 1992 won). Second place went to the Italian Olympic runner-up from 1996 and World Champion from 1995, Fiona May . Bronze went to the Russian world champion from 1997 Lyudmila Galkina .

qualification
August 20, 1998
27 participants competed in two groups for the qualification round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 6.65 m. Seven athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the five next-placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 6.56 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
