The men's long jump at the 1998 European Athletics Championships was held on August 18 and 19, 1998 in the Népstadion in the Hungarian capital, Budapest .

The European champion was the Russian World Cup third in 1997 Kirill Sossunow . He won before the Romanian Bogdan Țăruş . The Bulgarian Petar Datschew won the bronze medal.

qualification

August 18, 1998

37 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 8.05 m. Two athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the ten next-placed athletes to twelve jumpers (highlighted in light green). In the end, 7.77 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
