Gregor Cankar

Gregor Cankar (born January 25, 1975 in Celje ) is a former Slovenian athlete who specialized in the long jump .

He was Junior World Champion in Lisbon in 1994 and won the bronze medal at the Universiade in Fukuoka in 1995 . In 1996 he finished fourth at the European Indoor Championships in Stockholm and sixth at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in the long jump.

At the IAAF World Indoor Championships in 1997 in Paris , he was seventh. In the same year he won the Mediterranean Games in Bari and was again third at the Universiade in Sicily .

After a sixth place at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1998 in Valencia and a fourth place at the 1999 World Indoor Athletics Championships in Maebashi , Cankar finally celebrated the greatest success of his career at the 1999 World Athletics Championships in Seville . There he won the bronze medal behind Iván Pedroso and Yago Lamela with a distance of 8.36 m . As a result, Cankar was voted Sportsman of the Year in Slovenia .

After that, however, he was unable to build on his earlier achievements. He was eliminated from the qualification at the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 and in Athens in 2004 and at the European Athletics Championships in Munich in 2002 .

Gregor Cankar is 1.79 m tall and weighed 67 kg when he was active.
