The men's long jump at the European Athletics Championships in 1986 was held on August 28 and 29, 1986 in the Neckar Stadium in Stuttgart .

In this competition, the Soviet long jumpers achieved a double victory. European champion was the European record holder Robert Emmijan . He won ahead of Sergei Lajewski . Bronze went to Giovanni Evangelisti, the Italian third-placed Olympic athlete from 1984 .

Record improvement

European champion Robert Emmijan improved the existing EM record in the final on August 29 by sixteen centimeters to 8.41 m. Soviet UnionSoviet Union

qualification

August 28, 1986

Eighteen participants went to the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 7.80 m. Seven athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the five next-placed athletes to twelve jumpers (highlighted in light green). In the end, 7.70 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
