The men's 1500 meter run at the European Athletics Championships in 1986 took place on August 29 and 31, 1986 in the Neckar Stadium in Stuttgart .

In this competition there was a double victory for the British runners. The defending champion, Olympic champion in 1984 and world record holder Steve Cram , who had won bronze over 800 meters three days earlier , became European champions . Second place went to the 1980 and 1984 Olympic champion Sebastian Coe , who was already European champion over 800 meters. The Dutchman Han Kulker came in third place.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was carried out in three runs. The first three athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - and the three fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the final. The three runners who made it through their time for the final all came from the fast third run.
