List of superintendents and general superintendents in Altenburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With the introduction of the Reformation , the office of superintendent was created in the city of Altenburg , who exercised spiritual supervision over the pastors (later also the schools) in the city and the rural area. The superintendents also had a preaching office at the Bartholomäikirche . After the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg had become an independent territory in 1603 , the superintendents became general superintendents, as they now also oversaw the state's other superintendents. They exercised this together with the Altenburg Consistory, founded in 1612 , in which they participated as councils and assessors. This remained so when the territory was part of the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg between 1672 and 1826 . During the time of the second duchy of Saxony-Altenburg (1826-1918) and the Free State of Saxony-Altenburg , the general superintendents were again the highest representatives of the Protestant church system in their country.
