Heinrich Himmel , also Hümmel and Latinized Coelum, (* 1486 in Emmerich ? † September 20, 1553 in Altenburg ) was a German Lutheran theologian and reformer .

Life

Himmel probably entered the Augustinian Hermit Order in Cologne . When he matriculated in Wittenberg in 1516, he was registered with his monastery name as Augustinus de Embrica. He obtained the Baccalaureat in 1517 and the Master's degree in 1518 . He must have been a capable theologian, because he had been giving theological lectures in the Cologne Convention since 1521. However, the Cologne Theological Faculty forbids him.

The archbishop initiated proceedings against him, but to no avail. The chronicler writes that “error and quarrel” continued to prevail in the monastery. The visitation that Johannes Spangenberg carries out as vicar of the order has only a temporary effect. The tension continued. The new prior therefore resigned. Martin Luther calls heaven "fine, quiet, moral, learned and pious".

When he left the monastery, he first stayed in Cologne as a preacher. In 1525 he became a preacher at the castle church in Wittenberg . On the recommendation of the visitors he came to Colditz as superintendent in 1529 . In May 1545 he succeeded Georg Spalatin as superintendent in Altenburg . He was in correspondence with Luther and Philipp Melanchthon .
