He attended elementary school in his father's branch and was educated by private tutors with noble children. During that time he trained in disputing, practiced sermons and worked as a tutor. In 1727 he became a Baccalaurus and in 1728 a master's degree in philosophical sciences. In the same year 1728 he also obtained the permission to hold lectures as a Magister legens at universities, became rector of the city school of Sangerhausen , 1730 rector of the council school in Naumburg , 1732 subdeacon at the Wenzelkirche in Naumburg and 1739 superintendent in Torgau . During that time he completed on February 7, 1741 Leipzig, the licentiate in theology and a doctorate there on February 9, 1741 to the doctor of theology . In 1742 he became the court preacher of Duke Johann Adolf II of Saxony-Weissenfels , consistorial councilor in Weißenfels and general superintendent of the Principality of Querfurt, and from 1743 he held the high school professorship at the Illustre high school in Weissenfels .

After the Duke's death, he went to Plauen as superintendent in 1746 . 1748 he was by Friedrich III. He went to the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig as a pastor on January 1, 1751 , became professor of theology at the University of Leipzig in March of the same year , so that he was canon in Zeitz, who was introduced as superintendent of Leipzig on April 29, 1756 Assessor at the consistory, second professor of theology, thus canon in Meißen and Decemvir at the Leipzig University. Stemler's theological standpoint was that of moderate Lutheran orthodoxy , but without contentiousness.
