Johann Gottlob Pfeiffer

Johann Gottlob Pfeiffer (* 1667 in Meißen ; † April 21, 1740 in Leipzig ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

Johann Gottlob Pfeiffer was the son of a church musician at the St. Afra Church in Meißen. He had attended the electoral state school St. Afra in Meissen and began studying philosophical and theological sciences at the University of Leipzig . In Leipzig Gottfried Olearius (theologian, 1672) , Gottlob Friedrich Seeligmann , Valentin Alberti , Adam Rechenberg , August Quirinus Rivinus , Thomas Ittig , Johannes Cyprian , Otto Mencke and Joachim Feller were his teachers. As an electoral scholarship holder, he had primarily dealt with oriental languages . In 1696 he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy in Leipzig and completed his habilitation that same year.

After lecturing on the Hebrew language, he was admitted to the theological faculty as a baccalaurus in 1698 , where he read on homiletics and ethics. In 1707 he became associate professor of oriental languages ​​and the Talmud and in 1721 associate professor of theology. In his sermons in the Pauline Church he developed a great eloquence. In 1723 he became a full professor and in the same year licentiate in theology. In 1724 he received his doctorate in theology.

Pfeiffer, who felt connected to the ideas of the Enlightenment, was close to Pietism and was an excellent orientalist. He had also earned a reputation as a composer.
