John Cyprian

Johannes Cyprian (also: Johann Cyprianus ; * October 24, 1642 in Rawitsch ; † March 12, 1723 in Leipzig ) was a Polish physicist and Lutheran theologian.

Life

Johannes Cyprian was the son of the merchant and trader Georg Cyprian. His mother Susanne Renner was born in Silesia and was the daughter of a merchant from Gurau . She came from a Polish family and remained adherent to the Catholic faith. His grandfather Johann Cyprian, who died at the age of 103, was also Catholic and married to Rebekka Sehlin from Cologne.

At a young age, Cyprian received a good education from his evangelical father. At the age of twelve he attended the extended school in his hometown. In 1654 the Swedes invaded his homeland, so that his family fled to Herrnstadt in Silesia. There he continued his education for half a year at the local school.

He then attended St. Elisabeth High School in Breslau in 1655 , then from 1662 the University of Leipzig and initially studied philosophical sciences. For this purpose, Cyprian attended the lectures of Johann Adam Schertzer , Christian Thomasius , Friedrich Rappold (1615–1676) and Valentin Alberti . He heard dialectics and metaphysics from Johann Sigismund Schwenck († 1670), the Hebrew language from Johann Benedict Carpzov II and Valentin Friderici (1630–1702), rights from Bartholomäus Leonhard Schwendendörffer and Georg Tobias Schwendendörffer . In 1663 he became a Baccalaureus and in 1664 he acquired the degree of master's degree in philosophy. On May 22, 1665 he completed his habilitation with the dissertation de signis .

On the side he had devoted himself mainly to studying theology. He also attended lectures by Schertzer, Georg Möbius , Rappold, Alberti and Johannes Olearius (1639-1713) . In 1669 he moved to the University of Jena , where he was accepted into the house of the historian Johann Andreas Bose , whose library he was able to use. There he dealt with church and civil history. At the same time he attended the theological lectures given by Friedemann Bechmann , Johannes Musäus and Sebastian Niemann . When he returned to Leipzig, he was given permission to hold theological lectures in 1670 after the De Adoratione dissertation had been held. In 1675 he became a member of the small prince's college and in 1676 adjunct of the philosophical faculty and associate professor of physics.

After he had found admission to the theological faculty as a baccalaureate in theology in 1677, Cyprian was given the full professorship of physics in 1678. On August 22, 1678, he acquired a licentiate in theology and on April 26, 1679, he became a member of the great princes' college, of which he was a prepositor in 1680 and 1688. After he worked as administrator of the village communities of the university in 1699, he became assessor of the theological faculty on September 3, 1699 . On 9 November 1699 he was awarded the dissertation Pro Loco for doctor of theology doctorate . In 1700 he became an associate professor of theology and senior of the Polish nation. In 1710 he was promoted to the full professorship of theology, in 1713 he became a canon in Zeitz , and in 1715 in Meissen , associated with Ephorus the electoral scholarship holder. In 1721 he was the highest dignitary of the theological faculty as its first professor and as the oldest senior member of the University of Leipzig.

He achieved these honors in the university business through his tireless participation in the organizational tasks of the university. He was a decemvir at the Leipzig philosophical faculty in 1707 and 1710 , was dean seven times in the same faculty, was twice procancellor of the university and in 1718 was inspector of the university's economics and the Leipzig consistory . From 1715 until the end of his life he was the permanent dean of the theological faculty and administered the rectorate of the Alma Mater in the winter semesters 1682, 1690, 1696, 1702, 1708, 1712 and 1718 . Cyprian was a member of various Leipzig learned societies, was prepositor of the Pauline College and the Pauline Church in 1716 . He is the co-founder of Acta Eruditorum . He died at the age of 80 after a heart attack and was buried on March 14, 1723 in the Paulinerkirche .

His marriage to Christina († December 6, 1727), the daughter of Georg Möbius , widow of the court attorney Friedrich Tobias Möbius, remained childless on January 25, 1680 .

Act

Cyprian has always been classified as an insignificant theologian in theological examination of history. In fact, a different hermeneutical approach should be used for a more intensive consideration of his historical-scientific achievement . Cyprian not only edited the life story of Wolfgang Franz , but also wrote the outline of his life for many contemporaries of the time. So z. B. for Johann Jakob von Ryssel (1627–1699), Quirin Hartmann Schacher (1597–1670) , Christian Siegmund Schacher , Johann Friedrich Ortlob (1661–1700), Johann Alexander Christ (1648–1707), Georg Lehmann (1616–1699 ) and Otto Mencke .

He may not have stood out particularly exegetically or homiletically . However, as a representative of Lutheran orthodoxy, he was deeply involved in the disputes against Pietism . He himself belongs to the Leipzig group of early enlighteners . As one of the highest representatives of the Saxon theological conception of the time, his sphere of influence must not have been insignificant. He has also appeared as the despositor of numerous respondents .
