Life

His father Andreas Rivinus (1601–1656) was a professor of philosophy and medicine in Leipzig. He was also known as a neo-Latin poet . He called himself the Latinized Rivinus.

August Quirinus Rivinus studied medicine at the University of Leipzig (among others with Michael Ettmüller , Gottfried Welsch , and Johannes Bohn ). In 1670 he became a Bachelor of Philosophy, in 1671 a Magister artium . He continued his studies at the University of Helmstedt , where he was awarded a Dr. med. received his doctorate . Rivinus then worked as a general practitioner in Leipzig. He was also a private lecturer from 1677 and a member of the medical faculty from 1688. From 1691 he was Professor of Physiology and Botany , from 1701 Professor of Pathology and later Professor of Therapy and Director of the Botanical Garden at the University of Leipzig. In 1699 he became a corresponding member of the Académie royale des sciences .

Services

Rivinus set up a plant system in which the corolla is a differentiating feature. Incidentally, he followed the morphological and terminological principles of the philosopher and botanist Joachim Jungius and disseminated ideas of binary nomenclature. He demanded that the generic name must be mentioned for each species and that the specific species name should follow it as an adjective. However, he did not adhere to this requirement even in his work on plant systematics.

Rivinus published a number of medical, botanical, and astronomical papers. A compilation of his works was published under the title Dissertatione medicae diversis temporibus habitae, nunc vero in unum fasciculum collectae 1710 in Leipzig.

As a result of his sunspot observations , he was blind for the last ten years of his life.

Honors

On November 30, 1703 he was elected as a member ("Fellow") in the Royal Society .

Charles Plumier named the genus Rivina from the pokeweed family (Phytolaccaceae) in his honor . Carl von Linné later took over this name. The type epithet of the grove violet ( Viola riviniana Reichenb. ) Was named after Rivinus.
