The 1,500-meter race of the men at the 2006 European Athletics Championships was on 7 and 9 August 2006 at the Ullevi stadium of the city of Gothenburg held.

European champion was the French defending champion and vice world champion in 2003 Mehdi Baala . Second place went to the Ukrainian World Cup third in 2003, Iwan Heschko . The Spaniard Juan Carlos Higuero won the bronze medal, which he also did over 5000 meters four days later .

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in two runs. The first four athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the four fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the final. All runners who won their eligibility to participate in the finals over time were recruited from the second, significantly faster run-up.

Mehdi Baala defeated the Ukrainian Iwan Heschko and his three Spanish competitors with a long sprint, all other finalists were already behind at the beginning of the last round. Baala managed to successfully defend his title, this time having a significantly larger lead at the finish than at the photo finish in 2002 .
