The women's marathon at the 2006 European Athletics Championships took place on August 12, 2006 at 12:10 pm local time in Gothenburg , Sweden .

The German Ulrike Maisch won the race in 2:30:01 hours. The Serbian Olivera Jevtić was vice European champion ahead of the Russian Irina Permitina .

For the third time at the European Championships, there was a team classification, the so-called Marathon Cup. For this, the times of the three best runners per nation were added up. However, the evaluation was not part of the official medal table. The team from Italy won ahead of Russia and Germany, only these three teams were included in the ranking.

Ulrike Maisch was eighth in 2002 and was actually only rated as the third strongest German runner. She did not keep up with the pace of the top group during the first accelerations after the half marathon mark, but was able to overtake all runners in the final section and win the first gold medal in the women's marathon for Germany. Olivera Jevtić won the first medal for Serbia at these European championships.
