Ulrike Maisch (born January 21, 1977 in Stralsund ) is a German long-distance runner who has specialized in the marathon . Her greatest sporting success is winning the marathon title at the European Athletics Championships 2006 in Gothenburg .

Career

She ran her first marathon in 2000 when she finished 18th in the Berlin Marathon in 2:40:34 hours. In 2002 she won her first national title at the half marathon championships, came second in the national cross country championships and won the Bonn marathon in 2:35:02 hours. She qualified for the marathon of the European Athletics Championships in Munich in 2002 , where she finished eighth and took first place in the team ranking with the other German runners. Soon after, she came second in the Cologne Marathon .

In the next year a third (cross-country run) and a second place (half marathon) at the national championships followed a 20th place at the marathon of the World Athletics Championships 2003 in Paris . In 2004 the runner took part in the Olympic Games in Athens . After 28 kilometers, she had to give up the marathon on the historic route due to pain in her right foot and later undergo an operation.

On April 23, 2006 Ulrike Maisch reported back on the marathon route. She ran as ninth (and best German) in the Hamburg Marathon a time of 2:31:56 h and thus secured the European Championship qualification. On August 12, 2006 she then won the marathon title at the European Championships in Gothenburg . At kilometer 25, she was still one minute behind the lead, but then rolled up the field from behind and won by 26 seconds in her personal best of 2:30:01 h. She is the first German European champion over this distance. Because of this success, Ulrike Maisch was voted athlete of the year 2006.

Shortly after the 2006 European Championships, her left foot suffered an injury that prevented her from walking well into 2007. She therefore decided not to take part in the 2007 World Athletics Championships and instead started later in the autumn at the Frankfurt Marathon , where she was sixth in 2:32:41 hours.

In 2008 she won the premiere of the Grand 10 Berlin , but because of further injury problems she did not start over the marathon distance. In 2009 she finished third in the Hamburg Marathon in 2:34:28 h. As a result, she was initially only nominated as a substitute runner for the marathon at the World Athletics Championships in 2009 , but was then used after Irina Mikitenko's cancellation at short notice . Pain in the heel , the cause of which was subsequently determined to be Haglund's syndrome , forced her to give up after 32 kilometers. At the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona in 2010, she said she did not want to defend her title after multiple injuries and visibly in anticipation of the first child in a ZDF interview.

Ulrike Maisch is 1.70 m tall and weighs 54 kg. She trains at 1. LAV Rostock under her trainer Klaus-Peter Weippert.
