qualification
Forty participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. This large number of athletes in this still young discipline hammer throw was very high, especially compared to the other throwing disciplines. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the finals was 70.00 m. Two athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the eight next-placed throwers to twelve participants (highlighted in light green). So finally 66.81 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
