The men's 20 km walk at the 2006 European Athletics Championships was held on August 8, 2006 in the streets of Gothenburg .

European champion was the Spanish defending champion, Olympic silver medalist from 2004 and two-time runner-up ( 2003 / 2005 ) Francisco Javier Fernández . He won ahead of the Russian Valeri Borchin . Bronze went to the Portuguese João Vieira .

Note:
The previously existing practice of not keeping records in marathon running and street walking due to the different track conditions with the exception of championship records was no longer used from 2003 onwards. Since then there have also been official records in these road competitions. However, the fastest time of a European in 20 km walking had been achieved before 2003, so that this performance was not considered a record, but the best time.

The existing EM record was not set at these European championships and was not improved.

There was no preliminary round, all 19 walkers went to the final together.

Francisco Javier Fernández, 2004 Olympic silver medalist and two-time runner-up ( 2003 / 2005 ), defended his title confidently - he was later a confessed doping offenders with a two-year ban

Defending champion Francisco Javier Fernández pulled away from the rest of the field early on and marched confidently to another victory. For a long time the chasing group consisted only of the three participating Russians, but the Portuguese João Vieira was able to catch up with this group and finally won the bronze medal with a new national record.
