The men's 1,500-meter run at the 1990 European Athletics Championships was held on August 30 and September 1, 1990 in the Poljud stadium in Split .
Jens-Peter Herold from the GDR won the European championship in 1988 . He won ahead of the Italian Gennaro Di Napoli . Third place went to the Portuguese Mário Silva .

Preliminary round
August 30, 1990
The preliminary round was held in two runs. The first five athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the two fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the final. In addition, Peter Elliott, who was unable to finish the race due to a handicap from Hauke Fuhlbrügge, was admitted to the final. Hauke Fuhlbrügge was disqualified. The basis for these measures were rules 163.2a and 163.2b of the International Competition Rules (IWR) for athletics.

Fermín Cacho finished eleventh in his first major international final - in the following years he won numerous Olympic, World Cup and European Championship medals, the climax of which was his Olympic victory in 1992
