José Manuel Abascal (born March 17, 1958 in Santander ) is a former Spanish medium and long-distance runner who appeared internationally, especially in the 1,500 meter run .

In 1982 he won the silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Milan and the bronze medal over 1500 m at the European Outdoor Championships in Athens . The following year he was second again at the European Indoor Championships in Budapest and fifth at the World Championships in Helsinki . He also won the bronze medal at the Mediterranean Games .

Abascal celebrated the most important success of his career at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . In the 1500 meter run, he secured third place behind the Britons Sebastian Coe and Steve Cram . In contrast, he narrowly missed the finals at the European Athletics Championships in 1986 in Stuttgart. In 1987 he won the silver medal at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Indianapolis . In addition, he started in the same year at the World Championships in Rome in the 5000 meter run , but could not qualify for the final.

José Manuel Abascal is 1.82 m tall and had a competition weight of 67 kg. He started for the athletics department of FC Barcelona .
