The men's 400-meter hurdles at the 1998 European Athletics Championships took place from August 18 to 20, 1998 in the Népstadion in the Hungarian capital, Budapest .
European champion was Paweł Januszewski from Poland . The Russian Ruslan Mashchenko won the silver medal. Bronze went to the Italian Fabrizio Mori .

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in four runs. The first three athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the four fastest runners - highlighted in light green - reached the semi-finals. All athletes who qualified for the second round over their time came from the third heat, which was significantly faster than the other three races in the preliminary round
