The men's 400-meter hurdles at the 1982 European Athletics Championships was held from September 6 to 8, 1982 in the Olympic Stadium in Athens .

The German defending champion Harald Schmid became European champion, who improved his own European record by 37 hundredths of a second in the final. He won ahead of the Soviet runner Alexander Yazewitsch . Bronze went to Uwe Ackermann from the GDR.

Record improvement

European champion Harald Schmid improved his own EM record in the final on September 8th by 1.03 seconds to 47.48 seconds. In doing so, he also increased his own European record by 37 hundredths of a second Germany BRBR Germany

Preliminary round

September 6, 1982

The preliminary round was carried out in three runs. The first four athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the four fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the semifinals.

The second run was so fast that all participants qualified for the next round.
