The women's long jump at the European Athletics Championships in 1962 was held on September 14th and 15th, 1962 in Belgrade's Partizan Stadium .
The European champion was the Soviet world record holder Tatiana Shchelkanova . She won before the Polish Olympic champion from 1956 and Olympic runner-up from 1960 Elżbieta Krzesińska . Bronze went to Mary Rand from Great Britain .

Record improvements
European champion Tatiana Shchelkanova improved the existing EM record in qualifying on September 14 by 24 centimeters to 6.38 m.

The eighteen participants took part in a joint qualifying round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 6.00 m. Since only eleven athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best placed athlete to twelve jumpers (highlighted in light green). So finally 5.98 m was enough for the final.
