The men's high jump at the European Athletics Championships in 1962 was held on September 15 and 15, 1962 in Belgrade's Partizan Stadium .
The high jumpers from the Soviet Union won two medals with gold and bronze. The European champion was the world record holder and Olympic runner-up in 1960, Waleri Brumel . Second place went to the Swedish EM third from 1958, Stig Pettersson . Bronze went to the 1960 Olympic champion Robert Schawlakadze .

Record improvement
European champion Waleri Brumel improved the existing EM record in the final on September 16 by nine centimeters to 2.21 m.
qualification

The twenty participants competed in a joint qualifying round. The qualification height for the direct entry into the final was 2.03 m. Since only eight athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the best placed athletes behind it (highlighted in light green). So finally fourteen participants reached the final with skipped 2.00 m. Two high jumpers who had also mastered 2.00 m were eliminated, as were four other athletes who jumped 1.95 m.
