Richard Dahl

Richard Dahl (born August 5, 1933 in Landskrona , † August 8, 2007 ) was a Swedish athlete . He became European high jump champion in 1958 .

Before the 1958 season, the Swedish high jump record was 2.11 meters, which the European champion Bengt Nilsson jumped in September 1954. The world record of the Russian Yuri Stepanov stood at 2.16 meters since 1957.

At the European Championships in Stockholm in 1958 , Stepanow was the favorite, while the Swede Stig Pettersson was one of the favorites. In the final, Dahl, who started with a personal best of 2.08, rose to the new Swedish record of 2.12 meters. He won the competition in front of the Czechoslovak Jiří Lanský and his compatriot Pettersson, the world record holder Stepanow was only sixth. Lansky had also won silver behind Nilsson four years earlier.

As the only Swedish winner at the European Championships in Stockholm, Dahl was awarded the Svenska Dagbladet gold medal in 1958 .

After his career, Richard Dahl became a sports journalist.
