Jesper Tørring

Jesper Tørring (born September 27, 1947 in Randers ) is a former Danish athlete . With a height of 1.86 m, his competition weight was 72 kg.

Jesper Tørring became European high jump champion in 1974 . He is the only Dane who has won a title in a jumping competition at international championships.

Career

At the European Athletics Championships in Athens in 1969 , Jesper Tørring finished twelfth in the long jump with 7.41 meters . In 1971 in Helsinki he was eliminated from the 110 meter hurdles in 14.7 seconds in the lead. In the long jump, 7.52 was also not enough to qualify for the final. Also in Munich at the Olympic Games 1972 he was eliminated in the hurdles sprint in the run-up, his time was stopped with 14.50 seconds. In the long jump he remained in qualification without a valid attempt.

After becoming the Danish high jump champion for the first time in 1972, he made an international appearance in the following years, especially in this discipline. At the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1974 in Gothenburg, he finished fourth with 2.17 meters behind the Lithuanian Kęstutis Šapka , the Hungarian István Major and Vladimír Malý from the ČSSR.

Outdoors at the 1974 European Championships in Rome, Maly was eliminated in third, major in fourth and Pole Jacek Wszoła in fifth with 2.19 meters. Tørring and Šapka, on the other hand, jumped both 2.21 meters and 2.23 meters in the first attempt and both mastered 2.25 meters in the second attempt. So both had jumped higher with the flop than Dick Fosbury in his Olympic victory in 1968. After both Tørring and Šapka failed at 2.27 meters, Tørring won gold, since Šapka each failed at 2.17 meters and 2.19 meters was.

At the 1976 Olympic Games , Tørring was eighth with 2.18 meters. After that he could not achieve any top placements internationally.

Jesper Tørring was Danish champion in the hurdles sprint in 1971 and 1973–1977, in the long jump in the years 1969–1977 and in the high jump 1972–1973 and 1975–1980. He won a total of 33 Danish championship titles with indoor titles.
