Istvan Major

István Major (born May 20, 1949 in Budapest , † May 5, 2014 ) was a Hungarian athlete . He was a three-time European indoor high jump champion .

Career

Major finished fifth at the European Championships in Athens in 1969 . In 1971 he won the European Indoor Championships in Sofia and was fourth at the European Championships in Helsinki . In 1972 he defended his title at the European Indoor Championships in Grenoble and finished sixth at the Olympic Games in Munich . The third title in a row at the 1973 European Indoor Championships in Rotterdam was followed by silver at the Universiade in the summer .

In 1974 Major won silver at the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg and again came fourth at the European Championships in Rome , and in 1975 he was eighth at the European Indoor Championships in Katowice and again second at the Universiade. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , he was eliminated in qualification.

Major was Hungarian outdoor champion four times (1973, 1976–1978) and two indoor (1977, 1978).

Personal best

Major's best performance both outdoors and indoors was 2.24 m. He achieved this height outdoors on September 28, 1973 in Budapest , while indoors he had already mastered it on March 11, 1972 in Grenoble .
