Ruth V. "Ruthie" Matthes (born November 11, 1965 in Sun Valley ) is a former American cyclist and world champion who competed in races on the road and on a mountain bike .

In 1989, Ruthie Matthes was American champion in the criterion and took second place in the Women's Challenge . The following year she was second in road racing at the World Road Championships , third in the Cross Country World Championships , national road racing champion and won the Tour of Okinawa . In 1991 she became mountain bike world champion, and in 1992 she won the World Cup . In 1992 and 1993 she was third again at the Cross Country World Championships. In 1996 she became vice world champion again. In 2000 she started at the Olympic Games in Sydney and finished tenth in cross-country.

In 2011, Matthes was inducted into the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame .
